Because the causes of Restless leg syndrome are not fully understood treatment and medication is still in the formative stages.
But there are effective things that can be done to help with the symptoms.
Like most other sleep disorders, lifestyle changes are the first port of call. If the condition is not advanced, some simple lifestyle changes can have a marked effect.
There are also some medications which have been found to be usfull in treating restless leg syndrome.
If restless leg syndrome is accompanied by anemia and iron deficiency then a simple course of iron tablets might be enough to help ease the symptoms.
If restless leg syndrome is only mild, then some simple lifestyle changes might prove to be an effective treatment.
Dopamine agonists are the most commonly used drugs to treat restless leg syndrome. Dopamine agonists handle a low level of dopamine which is thought to be lacking in people with RLS. The two most commonly used dopamine agonists to treat restless leg syndrome are ropinirole and pramipexole. As with any medication, some people develop side-effects with these drugs. The benefit of treatment has to be weighed against the possible side-effects of treatment.
As with most sleep disorders it is probably best to try the lighter approach first and if symptoms persist then try the other treatments......And always consult your doctor.
